The buffet had a great variety of choices and very good food quality. We all preferred not to go to the planetarium after lunch so we had more time in the cenote, which was magical and quiet.

Unfortunately, it wasn't all smooth sailing after that.
I had a missed call from the provider, Mayaland tours, to request our hotel in order to confirm pick up and the time. Thankfully, they sent me a text straight after which I replied to with the details. I also requested a text reply for confirmation. It wasnt until about 7am the next morning (or our tour) that I received a text to say pick up was 8.15am. I had noticed another missed call but as I was asleep, my phone was on silent.
So we were ready for 8.15am but the minibus did not arrive. By 8.30am I was getting anxious so I sent a text saying we were still waiting and if the bus was on its way. A very quick text reply telling me the bus already left the pick up point!! Another hotel!! Of course I found this alarming and replied immediately saying my confirmation did not state this hotel but they insisted otherwise. I replied I have proof and requested the bus collect us. Thankfully it did but with all this, it was about 35 minutes later than planned.
The minibus was very comfortable with good views for all unlike another we've travelled in with another tour company. The driver pleasant and friendly.
Our first stop was Cenote Ik Kil. A shortened stop likely due to the pickup mess but arguably just about enough.
From there, it was a short drive to the archaeological site. A bit of orientation there and to receive our tickets and lunch stickers. We were initially told we would have 2 hours in the site, then lunch, then the planetarium. This subsequently changed to 1 hour in the site, then lunch then planetarium with time after to reenter the site and wander at our leisure. Again, this changed to remove the at leisure part.
The whole day felt rushed which is a shame because it could be such a great tour. The comfortable minibus, the lunch in the Mayaland restaurant and of course, the guide tour. We had small group of 9 with us, English speakers, and the rest Spanish speakers. We had just been on a tour which was supposed to be English only but was also Spanish and for us, it didnt work at all. This one was a slight improvement… the guide onsite would not translate a whole paragraph or two for what feels like 10 mins before doing the same again in English or Spanish (whichever was first). Instead he translated after each sentence. Takes a little getting used to be better than the other method. I speak a little Spanish but not enough to fully enjoy a tour and my family speak no Spanish. However, the onsite guide was good and we still enjoyed our "shortened" tour.
Lunch at the Mayaland Hotel was good. Buffet style with many options to choose from. There was also a little entertainment from the dancers.
The planetarium is a nice touch to finish the tour. Just a huge shame we couldn't go back into the site.
Mixed feelings about this tour. Has so much going for it. Just need to ensure they get the pick up details correct and not deviate from what customers have confirmation for. Also, not shorten the tour. It just casts a shadow on what would otherwise be an amazing day.
Would I book with Gray Line again…. the jury is out on that!

Hilario was prompt and courteous; he went above and beyond to ensure every person had exceptional service throughout the day. The Mercedes-Benz ride made traveling to Chich茅n simplified for the early-morning start to our day since riders could enjoy a 鈥渘ap鈥?as Hilario drove us to our destination. (*May wanna bring a blanket as it gets kinda chilly in the cabin otw). ?
Once at Chich茅n, Hilda and 6 others joined our group of 5. It was a small, personalized group that had a nice, morning breeze to follow us throughout the ancient grounds. Hilda was knowledgeable and a delight to learn from. My son, 12, absorbed the sites and quality of information as Hilda walked us through the history of the early Mayans.
Lunch was a perfect buffet of local cuisine. This isn鈥檛 a Michelin 5-star Restaurant, so be gracious in understanding they are providing for 100s of palates throughout the day at a convenient location. The food was enjoyable, and all beverages are included in this package. Otherwise, if you opt to go on your own, this will cost you around $40 p/p. It鈥檚 worth the package deal, my only wish is that we had more time to enjoy it. Perhaps Gray Line could give people the option to stay and eat or participate in the 鈥淢edicine Man鈥?act?
The final part of the day is visiting a descendant of the Mayans: a community leader/Medicine Man. Although I appreciate the continuity of heritage and history, I would have preferred the choice to 鈥渙pt鈥?out of this. Why? Personal reasons that conflict with my worldview. However, perhaps Mayaland can improve this by giving guests the option of participating or not in the future?
This of course is my opinion…
Overall, I believe Open the Gate: Chich茅n from Canc煤n is a 5-Star Tour because of the Overall Experience and Attention to Culture, History, Transportation, All that鈥檚 Included such as Guide, Buffet, Driver/Transportation, Drinks, Early Morning Access that missed the unforgiving Yucat谩n heat and crowds (Not included: *Chich茅n Entrance tickets/Planetarium will run about $25USD extra per person), and an experience enjoyed by the whole family!
Note: Wear sunscreen and bug repellent if you do not wear long, light-sleeved clothing. Dress for moderate walking on uneven terrain. Tour officially commences around 7:50 am and finishes around 1:10 pm. Hydrate. Use the bathroom prior to the beginning of the tour and know bathrooms will be located near the massive temple around 9:30 am- so that鈥檚 almost 2 hours from the beginning of the tour. Once the tour begins, food isn鈥檛 available until lunch around 11:30 am. (So 7:50-11:30 window without food. Bring a light snack if Blood-Sugar is an issue.)
