I have many GLA appraisals for my jewelry. They are very well done. The value of jewelry can vary widely depending on the appraiser. I find GLA appraisals are fair and accurate.

GLA most definitely overstates the value of the gems they certify by 1000%, they have done this on more than a few items that I bought. I would steer clear of this company, and as you can see from the other posts, others concur.

I brought a gem on the internet – just to see what I would get – good thing I was cautious the retail replacement value was stated as USD1540.00 on the gem summary quality stated as good – very good range –
the stone when it arrived has a value of less than $70, is dyed and glass filled
so beware of this company !

To my knowledge it is not unethical nor illegal for a jewelry appraiser to perform services on poor quality items as long as the items were correctly identified and graded fairly. I dont think appraisers discriminate against poor quality jewelry. They get paid to do a job just like everybody else. Buy better quality nexttime.
I dont think anybody should be buying jewelry for investment unless they really know what they are doing and have solid resources. Leave that for the experts in the trade.

AS A SOUTH AFRICAN I BOUGHT FIVE PEACES ON A GOVERNMENT AUCTION AND HAD THEM DELIVERED TO MY AMERICAN SON. A JEWELER FRIEND OF HIS CLASSIFIED THE STONES AS VERY POOR QUALITY, THE END RESULT IS THAT MY SON IS RETURNING EVERY THING AND I WILL LOOSE MORE THAN 16% OF MY SO CALLED GOOD INVESTMENT. THEY ACTION THE PRODUCTS ALL OVER THE WORLD THAT IS BASED ON TERRIBLE GLA EVALUATIONS . THEY ARE GIVING THE USA A BAD NAME AND SHOULD BE CLOSED DOWN. BE WARNED !! DR JOOP VENTER

Be careful about Gemological Laboratory of America and its Director Christina Cruz. This person with a GIA diploma, does not have any integrity and ethics in term of evaluating Jewels. In order to satisfy dishonest companies who sell junk jewels on the internet, she provide a highly misleading value estimates, in ost cases it can be tens of times the real valu of an item. I had personnal experience, when I bought items from a company that seemed to be a big Ripoff. Whwn I tried to contact Christina Cruz from Gemological Laboratory of America or GLA who evaluated those items, to have some answers about her evaluation process, she didn't even answered my request. Be careful this person and her company are dishonest. Her appraisals are too nice to be true.
