All going smoothly, booked a hire car online for 拢140 for two weeks, bought excess cover from Questor Insurance 拢50. No worries, right?
Arrived at Chania Airport, no Gold Car desk to be seen! Where is it? After searching and asking about for 20 mins, a VW Transporter mini van turns up with GoldCar stickers on it but there were people before us so we waited 15 minutes and the driver came back for us. That鈥檚 hassle but no big deal.
Arrived at the GoldCar office, ten minutes away from the Airport.
There is an irate couple in front of us. They are being forced into the Goldcar excess SCAM.
They say they have excess insurance already so they will hand over the credit card details to the tune of 1200 Euros 鈥?they will lose this money if the car is damaged. There credit card will not go through even though they have a 拢5000 limit!!
They start calling the bank at 10pm local time, of course there is no answer.
The manageress starts with us to save time.
We have to take out excess waiver insurance she says, costing another approx 200 Euros.
No thanks, we say,.we have excess waiver insurance. She starts the SPEEL>
If we don鈥檛 take the extra insurance, we will be liable to possibly 1200 Euros charge. This money is 鈥渉eld on our card鈥?until we hand the car back.
We were expecting this 鈥?i handed my Santander Visa Debit card over. She examines it. 鈥淵ou will be charged 180 Euros to 鈥渉old鈥?the money on this card if you use it.
What ? Where? By who? By your bank, Sir. 180 Euros? Really? To 鈥渉old鈥?1200 Euros? Yes. she says.
In balance, tired, no where near the hotel , 200 Euros vs 1200 plus 180 , IT IS A scam BUT WE PAID TO GET OUT.
We were led to the car, scratched, some dents, drove fine. I pointed these imperfections out to the GoldCar rep. Here it is 鈥淵ou do not need to worry Sir. You have Full Insurance.鈥?br />
GoldCar will do EVERYTHING to make you pay that extra insurance to them.
My advice. Take a bus to your resort/hotel/apartment. Relax for a day ,. Hire a car from a local place 鈥?30 Euros per day with full insurance.
GoldCar WILL RIP YOU OFF.

Therefore, I鈥檇 like to explain you how our coverage policy works. As you may have advised we always make the customer choose from two different options: deposit or additional coverage. However, we always offer additional cover (Super Relax Cover), because it already includes an excess, it exempts you of this requirement and it鈥檚 faster and easier than to block a deposit. If customers have third party coverage, they can request a refund from them in case of damages, but our additional coverage is always offered as a better alternative.
We are aware that third parties offer customers their own coverage, as in your case, but it should be explained that this coverage is only applied when a charge is debited from the deposit left by the customer to the rent-a-car company 鈥?this is how the third party鈥檚 coverage policy works. If you had left deposit and have had any damages on the car, you could have ask your insurance company for a refund of the damage鈥檚 cost, but we couldn鈥檛 ensure you that, because we鈥檙e not aware of the conditions of the third party鈥檚 coverage refund.
Although you couldn鈥檛 be able to hire the car in the conditions you wanted, please note that our additional cover was offered also for your peace of mind, because thanks to it the customer will be fully protected in case of an accident and we won鈥檛 be liable if any damage is made to the car.

Short drive to off-site rental.
Quick service at desk. I was first in queue, but didn't have to sign/review too many forms. Keys in hand quickly and brief vehicle inspection.
Drop off was simpler.

Great nifty little Nissan Micra 4door hatch (looks are deceiving, quite roomy inside), but very economical.
Great price, paid just under $90 (including petrol) for entire stay.
Picked up & dropped off at airport by shuttle, as car rental agency was a 5min drive away. Easy check in, approximately 10 mins to sign contract, check car over, pack car up (2 little boys in tow), then off we go.
Only negative is that u have to drop car at car agent during business hours, which I didn't have a problem with as our return flight catered during these times so check your alternatives if traveling outside business hours.

I have no hesitation in recommending this car rental company to others travelling to the Gold Coast.

All communications were easy to understand.
The pick up of the car was off site from the airport, but their Shuttle Service was brilliant. No delay, in fact it was easier vs the on site car rental system of the other bigger car rental companies.
The car itself was a little Toyota Corolla. Drove beautifully. It had some damage on one of the side panels when I picked it up (they hadn't repaired it yet), but it didn't affect the driving of the car.
Great service, friendly service, good car.
