Charleston Capitol Hotel

This is now the Ramada by Wyndham. I checked in with no issues. The front desk person was nice. There was nothing noting that breakfast was unavailable, so I was pretty irritated to find out they had not started serving yet. It's the only reason I booked in Charleston. We arrived pretty late after a 7 hour drive, so we pretty much passed out as soon as we laid down. The following morning, I threw the blanket back to find my phone and noticed the blanket was dirty. When we left, I asked the woman at the front desk if they could change the bedding on the beds because one was dirty. I'm pretty understanding, so I left it at that. We came back late that night and were, once again, pretty tired. The bedding had not been touched. I had to go back down and ask for bedding. I decided to change it myself so we could just sleep. I was given the excuse that they didn't have any housekeeping staff and should have been told I'd have to strip my own bed… I headed up and stripped the beds in anticipation for the clean bedding. We found another disgusting stain on the mattress cover. These stains were not 'washed but still present' stains. They were never washed. I wasn't even offered a discount. Just felt like I was inconveniencing them. This wasn't a leisurely trip for us. We were in WV to spend time with my very ill grandmother. I don't smoke. I didn't drink. Just me and my older kids. No parties. No juice. No eating on the beds. This wasn't our mess. I am just glad I had plenty of Lysol.

It would be much higher review, however, I refuse to give a decent rating to any business that does illegal Bait and Switch practices. I specifically searched in hotels for specific criteria based on very specific needs. I only searched hotels that had WiFi available as I'm traveling with a teenage who makes my life a nightmare when WiFi is not available, which is why I would never stay in a hotel that didn't have WiFi.

After driving 7 hours and checking in, I was told the hotel is going through renovations and some services like the phones in the room and WiFi might not be working. There was NO mention of this on the website where I booked the hotel as the hotel advertised free WiFi. They pretended that we might have WiFi service when I complained, but when I got to room there was no service at all.

Additionally we found that out of the 3 elevators, only 1 was working. This hotel is about 12 stories high with over 100 rooms and only one working elevator making for extremely long waits. When we called to complain about the issues and how they were NOT disclosed during booking the manager (who refused to speak with us directly) made it clear they didn't care and offered nothing, not even an apology, an explanation why it wasn't disclosed, nothing!

Do NOT stay at this hotel as management clearly does not care about their customers and clearly has no problem with ILLEGAL bait and switch practices.

If you're looking to get a room for sex with a hooker or do your drugs, then this is the place.

They do not have internet which is advertised, which means they don't have a check in system and you're playing room roulette. Who will walk in on you while you're sleeping, they will decide that. They use a school notebook to write your name in and they don't even check your ID. They ask if your room has been paid online already or if you need to pay them. Which I'm pretty sure is ran on a personal phone or personal computer and definitely not a secure server. Your credit information is probably at high risk here.

First room I was given, still had a woman in the bed. Yes, they put me in a room that was already occupied. Second room had dirty pillowcases and sheets with holes in them, baby flies and a knocking non working a/c. 3rd and finale room (because I'm exhausted and have to work early) burn holes in the sheets, holes in the curtains and dirty footprints on the wall. I wouldn't let my dogs stay here. Save your money and get an Air Bnb.

*in hotel as I wrote this review and just had two maintenance men attempt to come into my room with their maintenance key. I called the police, am awaiting their call and arrival. I am just wanting to get the hell out of here ASAP. Something weird going on in this place.

*Night manager called me after the maitenance men incident and told me that they can come n my room when they please to do work. First off, it 6:40pm, I was asleep and not clothed and they just put their key in the door and moved forward without announcing theirselves. Second, my room is occupied and paid for and they know it. NM didn't like that I had called the police or that I was reporting all of this to the BBB. Told me she wanted me out and I was banned for life. I replied that my work had paid for the room and I would not be leaving and she told me "ok, then we will make the rest of your stay as enjoyable as possible", in an extremely condescending voice. All their time I'm waiting for work to call and book me another hotel. They finally call and move me down the street to Holiday Inn, where I was treated wonderfully and had a nice clean room, clean white sheets and clean towels and bathroom. I slept amazing and they have a wonderful breakfast

This is a pretty bad hotel, best that can be said is we didn't take any bedbugs home. We got in around 10pm and the lobby was full of fans because the a/c was out. Checked in and found our card didn't work to get into the room. Had to go down THREE times before the girl at the desk relocated us. We get in and the rooms are decidedly meh. Dead bugs not vacuumed up in the corners, what looked like white paint all over the outside of our window so we couldn't see out, bathroom smelled. Then we get to breakfast and that is pretty disappointing. I'm not expecting much from a continental breakfast but it was sad. Two out of three elevators were also STILL out of service (which they have been for a long time going off other people's reviews).

Where do I begin? Arriving in Charleston early afternoon, and after realizing that the hotel I had previously booked was actually 20 miles outside of town, I cancelled it and found this one on Hotels.com. I'm not wealthy and am usually happy in a 2-star hotel, and although this one was a bit higher priced ($80), as it was rated 2.5 stars, and in a great location, it sounded good to me, especially knowing that breakfast was included.
After checking in, which was quick and easy (by the sole employee), I was directed to the elevators, as my room was on the 4th floor. Three elevators, two with hand-written "Out of Order" signs taped on them. After pressing the button and waiting over 5 minutes, I went back to the desk where the employee admitted that the maids "sometimes hold the elevators to make their cleaning easier.". He ran upstairs, and after a few more minutes, told me to try again. Finally the elevator came. Other people who got on said they also had long waits before.
The room was nice, and looked fine, until I stepped on a wet spot of the carpet just outside the bathroom, and saw that I was tracking in some kind of orange soapy substance. I placed a large, folded towel on the spot, which immediately soaked up a large quantity of it.
On the way out for the afternoon I told the desk guy who said he would send someone up to investigate.
When i returned that evening nothing had been done, and the towel on the carpet was still there.
The next morning, I was looking forward to breakfast before leaving, but it was pretty bad. The scrambled eggs were dry, the sausage was sad and old-looking, as was the fruit, and important items (like plates, for instance!) were nowhere to be found. I would have liked to have had a cup of black tea, but there was none to be found anywhere. The lady who seemed to be responsible kept disappearing, and I had to ask a maid to get some plates. I have up on the tea.
Speaking of the maids, they seemed fine with having breakfast, but nobody noticed or seemed to care that the breakfast room was in a bad state. There was no sign of a manager anywhere, and when I checked out, there wasn't even a desk clerk around.
This is a case of absentee management, and sad to say, but it looks like the owners are "managing" their way into a hotel closure, because I will never go there again, and will warn all my friends about it.

This is the worst hotel in town. Had reservations two months earlier. After driving 8 hrs got there to no reservations and no room. Worst costumer service experience ever. Do yourself a favor and check in somewhere else.

The Capital Hotel in Charleston definitely is a best value hotel. The rooms are big with double beds, fridge, and microwave. I feels like they are on the way to making improvements. The bathroom was really nice and modern but the hallways and lobby feel a bit worn. There is a sign saying they are renovating and says Wyndham hotel. Maybe it's on it's way to converting. They have a very big parking lot but it's not secure. The area is kinda sketchy so please watch your belongings. I did walk to the downtown area to hang at some local bars without any issues. It was actually a nice walk. It's very close to a lot of the music venues and convention hall in the area. Check in was smooth and the staff was kind as well.

WHen we got there I was with my three teenage children. First, they put me in a room with a king only. Not a big deal, I went to the front desk and they got me in a room with two queens. When we got into the room the beds hadn't been made. So we went to the front desk. He gave us another room. again that room was a king only. We went back to the front desk they gave us another room. We got on the elevator to go to yet another room. By the time we got there the front desk man had gone up the stairs, met us by the elevator and said he wanted to make sure the room was clean with two queens. When he knocked on the door a lady who looked like a "working girl" answered the door to that room and the man said "sorry I forgot you were in there". We then had to go back down stairs for him to find another room. He went to that room before we left the lobby to check the room out. He said it was clean and we could have that room. Mind you, it was 4 o'clock in the morning we had been traveling 8 hours, we were tired and other hotels in the area were booked. At any rate, we took the room. When we got in the room it was disgusting. The beds were made but the rest of the room was not clean there was trash in the trash cans, a loofah in the bathroom shower, socks left from the previous occupant in the closet and a lovely note that read, "we had a great stay in your hotel, Signed Kim" with a heart over the i. It was probably true, because there was a condom wraper next to the trash can. Again, if it wasnt 4 in the morning and I had my kids with me, I would have left but we were all tired.

Worst customer service I have ever encountered. The first room they gave us was so smoky, you couldn't even breathe in there. We got a second room and that one wasn't even made up! Our third room was ok, but the light nor TV worked. I don't understand how someone can just walk in here and smoke! (By the way my whole family who stayed here also had smoky rooms)

Nice rooms and all. But some of the desk staff were short temperd and seemed like to have a attitude as if they didn't want speak to me. Only one elevator works, I just use the stairs because waiting five minutes is asking too much. Other than all that everything was well "fine".

Currently here now but here's the thing. Staff is lovely, rooms are decent but only one elevator works, we requested for our room to be cleaned TWICE but NO ONE came.

Do not stay at this hotel. Everything that could've been wrong about this hotel was wrong.
First, my roommate and I were given a key to a room which worked. We entered the room, but the room was already inhabited. The woman living in the room came outside and proceeded to tell us that she was sent to rooms with people in them twice before getting her room/our room. We went down to the front desk only to find others from our group who had the same situation. They were met by a very angry hotel guest. We are in a group of 24. We already paid for the rooms and now they have no rooms left. Another room was found with unmade beds and dirty sheets. In the rooms where people were actually staying, the televisions and phones are broken. The staff will not help us and say that the manager will not be in until tomorrow.

The people are nice but unfortunately my room was dirty. The beds were made but none of the hard surfaces had been wiped. Which makes me wonder if the sheets were even clean.

I had to stop in Charleston due to unexpected car trouble and the staff of the hotel were extremely accommodating to my circumstances, and had me in a great room almost immediately. Thanks!

A disappointing stay in a room that smelled, had suspicious stains on the ceiling, looked like the bathtub hadn't been washed since the last guest, hallways smelled like smoke, elevators hadn't been inspected since 2016, and on top of that was looking forward to the contintel breakfast that was advertised, just to go find that there was no sign of life or breakfast to be seen with no explanation why. Do not stay, spend a little extra money and stay somewhere better!

We stayed for three nights. It is obvious that the hotel is going through renovations. The staff and management were very accommodating and pleasant. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a reasonably priced hotel that was very comfortable.

This hotel is getting better, was here on tour in Nov 2017 and it was under construction, now in March 2018, it's getting there. Bed was comfy, staff was nice. Little things like the actual toilet seat is a small toilet seat on a large toilet…. that needs to be fixed, lol. But this one is ok.

They are fixing it up. The entry is beautiful…not done but looking good. However we didn't sleep there we were on the third floor. It seems to me you gut 10 rooms close together and put your people in them. Fix an elevator and make it seem like everything is up and running. Won't go back.

I had read the reviews of this hotel prior to my visit and I had REALLY hoped to be pleasantly surprised. Since I was in town for my sister's wedding and this is where the room block was, I complied and stayed here. However, the reviews do not lie.

I understand the hotel is going through renovations, but I believe that overall there seems to be a subpar level of excellence at this hotel. Upon checking in, I was assured that I was being given 2 of their newly renovated rooms. Right away, when we got to the hallway where our rooms were located, at the end of the hall I saw a big spot with damage in the ceiling and a bucket underneath. But I reminded myself, "they're going through renovations, they're going through renovations.

Then I walked into my room. I could tell the carpet was new, the room smelled good and the beds were large and comfortable. That is where the positives stopped. When I checked out the bathroom, the sink and vanity looked like they were newly installed, however there was no lighting above the mirror. This might seem like a small issue, but it caused us to have to change the entire location for where the bridal party would get ready. Can't put on makeup using a mirror where there's no light! Next, the tub was unfinished. It looked like the tub mat had been peeled off and was not replaced. It made the tub look gross and not somewhere I wanted to shower. When I brought this to the attention of the front desk, they told me exactly what I had figured, that the tub mat had been scraped off leaving scratches but had not been replaced. But how can you say that a room has been renovated when it in fact is incomplete?! Why is that ok? Also the windows were not replaced either. I can tell the walls were repainted but the windows were old and moldy and dirty.

My biggest complaint is the cleanliness. I found things on the floor that were obviously left from the previous people who used the room. There was dirt in the corners of the room that had been missed by the vacuum. We stayed for three days and I could tell our tub was not cleaned during our stay.

Overall, this is not a place at which I would stay again.

It doesn't even deserve the one star. I'm one of the easiest people to please and this is just disgusting. My pictures only tell part of the story. This place is WAY over priced for the quality you are getting. We tried to plug in our phone chargers and they just fall out. We even have different brands and neither work with these outlets.

If you're looking for a convenient location to stop off for the night at a reasonable price, this is the place to go.

But… the room is pretty awful. I understand they're doing renovations which is good, and the staff was very friendly. However the room had significant mold on the ceiling and walls, as well as in the bathroom and on the shower curtain. Towels were clean, though our sheets had a large yellow stain on them… Clearly it was old but mentally it's still hard to get past that!

If you're staying short term, are on a budget, and are okay with a room that reflects both of those things – then this is the hotel to pick. Anything past that I would encourage you to look elsewhere!

Many things were not as advertised. They did not allow access to the pool nor the workout room. There was no breakfast provided. The TV remote did not work. When I went to the desk for new batteries they didn't have any. At the price we paid we felt very shortchanged.

The best thing about this hotel is the location followed by the price. Location wise it's right in the middle of the city center so everything is within walking distance so that was the main reason for staying here. It's also the cheapest hotel in the downtown area which cheaper isn't always better. Definitely run down, wall paper peeling all around and there we're some stains like in the other reviews. I would pay and extra 20 bucks to stay somewhere else. You get what you pay for!!

The location is wonderful. It's right off the interstate (I-64), located on a stop of a major bus line and is within walking distance of downtown shops and restaurants.
If you care about decor and want your hotel to have all new stuff, then do not stay here. However, if you just want a clean room, a workout facility, free breakfast, free parking and a convenient location, then this hotel is your best value. This hotel seemed as if it used to be an old "Holiday Inn" of the 1970s. Though it seemed it had not been totally renovated since then, it had splashes of updated decor and everything was clean.

If you just want a basic hotel, this place is your best bet. If you want plush luxury and new accoutrements, then go elsewhere.

Bed was comfy and clean. That's all the good I can say. Towels were dingy, curtains were torn. Start your hot shower ten minutes before you plan to get in it. It takes that long to heat up on the 4th floor. The breakfast bar was closed at 9:15 am. Go someplace else!!!!!!
