When I first used Canopy Trees, seven years ago, I couldn鈥檛 have been more pleased. The chap was very professional, did a great job and cleaned up after himself. So when I needed similar work doing again I went with Canopy Trees, accepting their quote without quibble because I thought I鈥檇 be getting the same great level of service.
I couldn鈥檛 have been more wrong.
The chap that did the work this time, although very amiable, not only didn鈥檛 do all the work agreed upon, but left the garden looking as if a bomb had hit it. On top of that he鈥檇 fatally damaged a treasured shrub that had taken years to grow and knocked a chunk out of my front garden wall because he apparently couldn鈥檛 be bothered to open the second of the double gates to give himself more space.
I didn鈥檛 know about any of this until I went to look around after he鈥檇 gone 鈥?with my cash payment tucked firmly in his pocket.
When I complained to Canopy Trees all I got in reply was a one-line email offering to 鈥榩ut things right鈥?whatever that meant. I certainly didn鈥檛 want them back on my property to cause even more damage. There was no mention of a partial refund (in respect of work I鈥檇 paid for not being carried out) or of payment for the damage to the wall or to replace the damaged shrub.
I鈥檒l certainly never pay anyone in cash again. And next time I have any work done at all, I鈥檒l stand over the bloke the whole time, watch him like a hawk, and refuse to pay a red cent until the job is done properly. The stupidest words in the English language? 鈥淚鈥檒l leave you to get on with it.鈥?
