This person trades as Gladstone Paving Ltd but in fact he's not a limited company, he just uses it to give himself an air of respectability. I fell for his sales talk that he would give a very good price at this time of year, and hired him to tarmac my driveway. According to the written contract he gave me, it was supposed to be 2 1/2 inches of tarmac. He dug up the existing concrete, but left most of it behind, added some hardcore, compacted and laid tarmac on top. He didn't have enough to cover the whole area, so he brought in another batch to make up the shortfall. This left an ugly scar, a very unsightly blemish on a supposedly brand new tarmac drive. He offered to return in the new year to repair it, but I asked another builder to look at it. It turned out the tarmac was practically paper thin and peeled off like a banana skin. I had no option but to ask the other builder to finish the job.
Furthermore, the tarmac was uneven throughout, leaving lots of puddles when we hosed it down or it rained. His equipment was substandard, e.g. his breaker leaked oil and he kept borrowing my tools like my extension reel and my ladder, even my tape measure. He left rubble lying on the pavement in front of my house for days on end, because he said he didn't want to spend money bringing in the grab lorry more than once.
If you come across his leaflet drop in your mailbox, do yourself a favour and drop it in your rubbish bin. I wish I had done so.
